In a properly ventilated attic, air is drawn in low, near the eaves, and pushed out high, near the ridge. Indiana building code sets the target for how much airflow that takes: one square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor, split evenly — half intake, half exhaust.

When that balance is off, the whole system stops doing its job and that’s when the roof above it starts to pay the price.

Most ventilation problems are really balance problems, so we start with a measurement, not a guess. On every roof installation and roof quote, we run a customized calculation of both the intake and the exhaust for each attic space, looking at three things:

The thing we do on every roof installation or roof quote is a customized calculation of the intake and the exhaust. It’s not enough to just install the exhaust and hope the intake is oka – this is where a lot of people go wrong. Doing the exhaust is only half of the equation.  The order of the calculation matters as well. Intake always comes first because the exhaust cannot pull air out of an attic that never let it in in the first place.

Common Roof Ventilation and Vent Installation Projects

Indy Rooftops handles the full range of attic ventilation service, from a single failing vent to a complete system rebalance. Common projects include:

  • Attic ventilation installation — adding or enlarging soffit intake. Many older homes were built with 16-by-4-inch aluminum soffit vents that simply do not move enough air. We remove them, cut a larger opening, and install 16-by-8-inch vents, often adding around 30% more intake to reach code. Whether it is a full attic venting installation or a single vent, we size the solution to the home.
  • Roof vent replacements — swapping undersized box vents for a balanced ridge system or replacing a failed powered vent. For a roof ventilation repair on a power vent, we remove the surrounding shingles, detach the old unit, install the new vent, seal the penetration with an ice-and-water barrier, shingle back over it, and confirm it is operational before we leave.
  • Ridge and gable vents — when it comes to Indianapolis ridge vents and roof ventilation, our default is a natural, balanced system. Ridge vents are our preferred exhaust because they run along the highest point of the roof, where hot air naturally escapes. Natural solutions like soffit vents and ridge vents will last as long as you have the roof and should never need to be repaired.  Where a home has gable vents mixed with other exhaust, we often recommend closing the gables and moving to one balanced ridge system.
  • Edge and deck venting — many 1940s and 1950s homes were built with closed, airtight soffits and no intake at all. In those cases, we can vent the roof from the roofline itself, so air can finally reach the attic.
  • Powered and solar attic fans — when a cut-up or hip roof does not have enough ridge to breathe naturally, a fan can close the gap. We favor solar attic fans over electric because they cost less to add and nothing to run.

⚠️  A shingle manufacturer will not honor its warranty on a roof that is not ventilated to code — and their requirement is the building code. The manufacturer’s shingle warranties aren’t valid without proper ventilation. If it doesn’t meet their requirements for ventilation, they’re not going to honor the warranty.

Beyond the warranty, balanced ventilation simply makes a roof last longer.

Does ventilation really affect my shingle warranty?

Yes. Shingle manufacturers require code-compliant ventilation, and they can decline a warranty claim on a roof that is not ventilated properly. It is one of the most important reasons to get it right.

Can you add ventilation without replacing my whole roof?
